It was a beautiful ship. It sails from Iquitos, in Peru, about two thousand kilometres upriver from anything we sell. They had been planning a Brazil trip for four months and had not noticed. That is not carelessness. It is what happens when one phrase covers three unrelated products. **Quick answer:** "Amazon river cruise" means three different things. Ocean liners that sail up the river and dock at Manaus for a day, small luxury expedition ships which are almost all in **Peru** sailing from Iquitos, and Brazilian riverboats running out of Manaus into the Rio Negro and the Solimões. If a cruise you found looks like a floating boutique hotel, check the country before anything else: Delfin, Zafiro and Aria all sail in Peru. In Brazil the honest options are a small riverboat or a jungle lodge, and both start around US$950 per person for four days. ## The three things called an Amazon river cruise They share a river and nothing else. Different countries, different boats, different reasons to go. **Ocean cruise calls.** Seabourn, Oceania and others run itineraries that come up the Amazon from the Atlantic and dock at Manaus, sometimes at Santarém or Parintins. The ship carries several hundred to a couple of thousand passengers. You see the river from a high deck, go ashore for a day, and sail on. It is a cruise that includes the Amazon rather than an Amazon trip. **Luxury expedition ships.** Twenty or so suites, floor to ceiling glass, skiffs for the daily outings, a naturalist per group. This is the category most people picture, and it is overwhelmingly Peruvian: Delfin, Zafiro and the Aria all sail from Iquitos on the Marañón and the upper Amazon, into the Pacaya Samiria reserve. Excellent trips. Not Brazil. **Brazilian riverboats.** Traditional wooden or steel boats out of Manaus, usually eight to twenty guests, running north into the Rio Negro and the Anavilhanas archipelago or south into the Solimões. Simpler than the Peruvian ships and considerably closer to the water. This is what a Brazil trip actually offers, and it is the one we run. ## Most luxury Amazon cruises are in Peru, not Brazil This deserves its own heading because it costs people real money and real disappointment. Search "amazon river cruise" from the United States and the polished results that come back are, more often than not, Peruvian. The ships are genuinely lovely, the Pacaya Samiria reserve is genuinely wonderful, and none of it connects to Rio, the Pantanal or Iguaçu without a separate international flight and a separate visa question. There is no trick being played. Peru simply built that segment first and built it well. But if your route runs through Brazil, a Peruvian cruise is a second trip, not an add-on. The Brazilian equivalent exists and looks different: smaller, less polished, closer to the river, and priced accordingly. The one large ship operating from Manaus in the Peruvian style is the Iberostar Grand Amazon, which is a resort afloat rather than an expedition. ## What a Brazilian riverboat actually is Ours is a traditional riverboat with air-conditioned cabins, running three to eight days out of Manaus, mostly on the Rio Negro because the black water carries fewer mosquitoes and the Anavilhanas archipelago is one of the largest river island systems on earth. The days have a rhythm rather than a schedule. Out in a small boat at first light when the birds are moving, back for breakfast, into the flooded forest by canoe or along a trail depending on the water level, a swim where the guide says it is fine, and out again after dark for caiman with a torch. Pink river dolphins are common in the Rio Negro and nobody has to promise them, because they turn up. What it is not: a ship with a spa, an evening show, or a maître d'. A large ship at Manaus gives you the meeting of the waters, where the black Rio Negro and the muddy Solimões run side by side without mixing, the opera house, the market, and perhaps a short excursion to a nearby lodge or a canopy walkway. It is a real day and a good one. What it cannot give you is the thing the Amazon is famous for. Wildlife happens at dawn, in small boats, in narrow channels, hours from a port a cruise ship can enter. If you are on a liner and the Amazon is why you booked it, the honest move is to add three or four days in Manaus before or after the cruise, on a small boat, and let the ship be the ship. ## Which one is right for you **Choose a Peruvian expedition ship** if the boat itself matters, if you want comfort at that level, and if you are willing to make Peru the trip rather than a stop. **Choose a Brazilian riverboat** if you are already coming to Brazil, if being on the move suits you better than a fixed base, and if you would rather spend the money on the guide and the channels than on the interior design. **Choose a jungle lodge** if you would rather unpack once. Same wildlife, same guides, less transit, and it is the easier option with children. **Choose an ocean cruise** if the Amazon is one chapter of a longer voyage and you accept it as a day ashore. ## When to go: the water decides The Amazon has no dry season in the sense the Pantanal does. It has high water and low water, and they offer different trips rather than better and worse ones. **High water, roughly January to June,** floods the igapó forest and lets a canoe move between the treetops. Fewer beaches, more silence, and the boat can reach places that are solid ground for the rest of the year. **Low water, roughly July to December,** drops the river, opens sandbanks and forest trails, and concentrates wildlife along the shrinking channels. Better for walking and for fishing.
