They are all beautiful. That is not the problem. The problem is that Brazil is the size of a continent, you have two weeks, and four of the places on that list are three hour flights apart. So here is the same material sorted by a more useful question: which of these belongs on a **first** trip, and which is better saved. **Quick answer:** A first trip to Brazil is usually Rio, one wild place, and somewhere to stop moving. Rio de Janeiro, the Iguaçu Falls and either the Pantanal or the Amazon carry a fortnight comfortably, with Salvador instead of one of them if culture matters more than wildlife, and a few beach days at the end. Everything else on the famous lists, and there is a lot of it, is better as a second trip than crammed into a first. ## The short list for a first trip Four places do most of the work. **[Rio de Janeiro](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/rio-de-janeiro/)** because it is the one thing everybody pictures and it survives the expectation. Four days. **[Iguaçu Falls](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/foz-do-iguacu/)** because it is the least disputed decision in Brazilian travel. Three days. **One wild place**, and that means the [Pantanal](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/pantanal/) or the [Amazon](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/amazonia/). Four to five days. Not both, not on a first trip. **Somewhere to stop**, usually a beach. Three or four days at the end. That is thirteen or fourteen days without a single wasted transfer, and it is the shape of most first trips we plan. ## Rio: yes, and four days Rio earns its place on every list and it is the rare famous city that is better than its photographs. Four days is right. Two is a highlights sprint that leaves you resentful, and a week is more city than most people want at the start of a trip when the wild half is still ahead. Four gives you Sugarloaf at the right hour, Christ early enough to beat the queue, a proper day at a beach, Santa Teresa on foot, and one day held back for weather, because the mountain hides in cloud and a wasted Corcovado morning is the most common regret we hear. The seasonal flood pushes wildlife into the open beside rivers you can boat along, which is why it works. If you want to come home with photographs of large mammals, this is the place, and it is not close. **The Amazon, to be inside the forest.** The scale, the night sound, canoeing between treetops in high water, the river villages. It is an atmosphere rather than a wildlife tally, and it is magnificent on those terms. Do not go primarily for mammals. Doing both is a three week trip, not a two week one. It is a wonderful three week trip and we build it often, but it is not a compromise you should try to squeeze. ## Iguaçu: the easiest yes in Brazil Nobody has ever come back from the Iguaçu Falls disappointed, which is not something you can say about many famous sights. Three days, both sides, Brazilian for the panorama and Argentine for the walkways over the water. Add the boat that takes you under the cataracts if you do not mind being soaked to the skin, which you should not, because it is the best twenty minutes on the itinerary. It slots neatly between Rio and almost anywhere else. ## Where to finish Almost every good Brazil route ends somewhere you stop moving. After a fortnight of dawn starts and internal flights, the last three days should ask nothing of you. **[Praia do Forte](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/praia-do-forte/)**, an hour from Salvador, is the usual answer: a car-free sandy street, turtles at the Tamar project, calm water, and a flight home from Salvador. **[Ilha Grande](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/ilha-grande/)** or **[Paraty](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/paraty/)** on the Costa Verde if you are finishing near Rio, which saves an internal flight. **[Fernando de Noronha](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/fernando-de-noronha/)** if the beach is the point rather than the epilogue. It is the best of them by a distance, and it is also the most expensive and the hardest to get flights for, so it belongs in the plan first rather than last. ## The places that are better on a second trip This is the part the lists never tell you, and it is the reason first trips go wrong. **[Salvador](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/salvador/)** is the exception to the whole section: it belongs on a first trip if Afro-Brazilian culture, music and food are your reason for coming, and in that case it replaces the wild place rather than joining it. Everything below is superb and none of it is a first-trip decision. **[Lençóis Maranhenses](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/lencois-maranhenses/)**, the dunes full of turquoise lagoons, is one of the strangest landscapes on earth and sits a long way north with a narrow season. **[Chapada Diamantina](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/chapada-diamantina/)** is Bahia's trekking country and rewards people who want to walk rather than be driven. **[Bonito](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/bonito/)** has the clearest freshwater snorkelling in Brazil and pairs naturally with the Pantanal, which is exactly why it belongs on the trip where the Pantanal is not the novelty. **[Minas Gerais](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/minas-gerais/)** holds the country's finest baroque towns and its most loved cooking, and it asks for slow days. **[Florianópolis](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/florianopolis/)** is where our founder lives, with more than forty beaches on one island, and it is a holiday rather than a highlight. **[São Paulo](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/sao-paulo/)** is worth two days for the food and the art if your flights route through it anyway, and it is nobody's reason to come. ## What a first two weeks actually looks like Rio four nights, Iguaçu three, the Pantanal or the Amazon four, then three or four on the coast.
