It is the right first question. Nowhere else in Brazil does the calendar decide as much as it does here, because the thing you are coming to see is made of rain, and rain keeps a schedule. **Quick answer:** Come between June and September. The rains fall from roughly January to May and fill the valleys between the dunes with thousands of freshwater lagoons. From June the skies clear while the lagoons are still brimming, and that combination holds until about September. From October the water drops, and by late in the year many lagoons are simply gone. July sits at the peak in every sense, including the Brazilian school holidays, which is worth knowing before you book it. ## When is the best time to visit the Lençóis Maranhenses? June to September, when the lagoons are full and the skies have cleared. If you can choose freely within that window, July and August sit at its centre, and early September usually still delivers. That is a narrower answer than we give for most of Brazil, and it is meant to be. Rio is good in almost any month, the [Amazon](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/amazonia/) has two seasons and no bad one. The Lençóis have a genuine off period, and we would rather tell you so plainly than have you stand on a very impressive pile of dry sand in November wondering where the postcard went. ## Why does the month matter so much here? Because the lagoons are rainwater and nothing else. There is no river feeding the famous pools between the dunes; the rain that falls between roughly January and May collects in the valleys, and what you swim in from June onwards is that stored sky. When the dry months run on, the water level runs down with them. A desert with a rainy season sounds like a translation error. It is not, it is the whole trick. It rains for five months so that you can swim for four, and as trades go the Lençóis drive a fair one. The practical consequence: pick the month first and build the rest of the trip around it. We plan the Lençóis the way we plan the [Pantanal](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-the-pantanal/), season before route, route before hotels. ## The year, month by month - **January to April.** The rains are doing their work and the lagoons are filling, but the destination is not at its best yet, and the showers are frequent. This is the investment phase of the year. - **May.** The window usually starts to open: the rains taper off and the lagoons sit full. A good-value shoulder month, with the small caveat that the tail end of the wet season can still be felt early on. - **June.** The classic window is underway. Full lagoons, clearing skies, and the coast of the Northeast entering its dry, sunny stretch. - **July.** The peak, for the water and for everyone else. July is Brazil's school holiday month and the biggest domestic travel peak of the year, so the park is at its fullest in both senses. It is still a wonderful month, it just needs booking well ahead. - **August.** Our honest pick. The same full lagoons and dry skies as July, with the Brazilian holiday crowds back at work. The water begins to inch down late in the season, but you will not be the one to notice. - **September.** The late peak. Early in the month is usually still worthwhile; the lagoons are lowering as the dry stretch runs on, so this is the month where we check conditions before we confirm a plan. - **October to December.** Past the window. The lagoons sit low and many dry out entirely until the rains restart. We would not send anyone in these months without checking with our guide on the ground first, and most years the honest advice is to wait for June. ## How many days do you need, and how do you get there? Three to four days in the region is the honest number, and four is better than three. You fly into São Luís, the state capital, which has its own airport and a UNESCO World Heritage old town of faded Portuguese tile façades that deserves the afternoon most travellers never give it. From there you transfer to Barreirinhas, the gateway town on the Rio Preguiças, or carry on by boat down the river to Atins, a fishing village between the dunes and the sea. Atins has no roads, and as far as we can tell nobody there has ever missed them. The park itself is reached by open 4x4 and by boat, not by tour bus, which is a large part of why it still feels the way it does. It also means the day plan belongs to the weather. More than once our guide there has reshuffled a day overnight, the dune afternoon moved and the boat brought forward, because of what the sky was doing that morning. That is not a flaw in the itinerary. In the Lençóis, that is the itinerary. ## What do you actually do there besides swim? More than the photos suggest, and the photos suggest a lot. - **The lagoons, timed properly.** An open-top 4x4 takes you across the dunes to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita. We go in the late afternoon, for a swim in warm rainwater and the dunes turning gold as the sun drops, after the day-trip groups have started back. - **The river.** A boat down the Rio Preguiças passes the leaning lighthouse at Mandacaru and the palm beach of Caburé on the way to Atins. It is the prettiest transfer we sell anywhere in the Northeast. - **The scarlet ibis.** At dusk near Atins, thousands of scarlet ibis stream back to their mangrove roost and turn the trees flame-red for a few minutes. Almost no foreign visitor knows to ask for it, which we have never understood and never minded. - **The trek.** The only way to truly cross the Lençóis is on foot: roughly 39 kilometres over three days from Atins through Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos to Betânia, sleeping in hammocks in remote oasis homes and finishing by kayak on the Preguiças. - **The flight.** A 30 to 40 minute scenic flight from Barreirinhas, for the day the pattern finally makes sense: white sheets of sand laced with blue and green all the way to the sea. ## How hard is the trip, and is it safe? As hard as you order it. The standard trip moves by 4x4 and boat with short walks onto the dunes, and we pace it to you; the three-day trek exists for travellers who want the dunes the hard way, and there is no shame in wanting them the soft way instead. Say which one you are and we plan accordingly. On safety, the Lençóis are remote nature rather than a big city, and the risks are the outdoor kind: sun, soft sand, distance. You are with a private local guide who reads the dunes and the season for a living, and following their handful of sensible instructions covers most of it. We will not tell you anywhere is simply safe, because that sentence is never quite true. We will tell you what the guide removes, which here is nearly all of it. ## What does it cost, and what will go wrong? We only plan private, tailor-made trips, with your own guide, your own 4x4 and boat, and hand-picked pousadas in Barreirinhas or Atins, so the price depends on your dates, your group and how far you take it. The Lençóis are a remote destination where everything moves by 4x4 and boat, and private logistics there cost more than a city break; we would rather build you a real number for your real dates than print an average that fits nobody. Book July late and the pousadas will not be there either. And in any month, the sky may reorder your days, which is the one problem here we have never managed to plan away, only around. ## What does the Lençóis combine with?
