Every river and every cave here runs timed entry with a capped number of visitors, so the order of your mornings is fixed weeks in advance rather than decided over breakfast. That sounds like a restriction. It is the reason the water is still clear. **Quick answer:** Bonito is an ecotourism town inland in Mato Grosso do Sul where everything worth doing happens in fresh water: you drift a spring-fed river in a wetsuit, snorkel a flooded cave and swim under waterfalls. Two to three days is right, and almost nobody comes for Bonito alone, it is the second half of a southern [Pantanal](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/southern-pantanal/) trip, two and a half hours away by road. May to September gives the clearest water. Every site is capped and timed, so this is the one destination where booking late costs you the good slots rather than the trip. ## What is there actually to do in Bonito? Three things, and they are all wet. The rivers here run out of limestone springs, which is why you can read the riverbed from the surface and why the fish stay put while you drift past them. - **Float the Rio Sucuri or the Rio da Prata.** You enter at the spring, put your face in, and drift roughly a kilometre with the current while the fish carry on with their day around you. Wetsuits are provided and the water sits at 21 to 23 degrees all year. - **Snorkel or dive a flooded cave.** The same limestone that made the springs made caves that filled with water rather than air. Snorkelling reaches the flooded chambers, and certified divers can go deeper. This is the part nobody expects before they arrive. - **The waterfall circuit.** A walking circuit between waterfalls you can swim under, which is the right way to use an afternoon between two river mornings. There is one instruction that matters more than any of the gear: **do not kick.** Kicking lifts sediment and clouds the water for everyone behind you. Bonito may be the only destination we send guests to where the correct technique is to be completely lazy. And a plain statement of what it is not. Bonito is not a beach destination and it is not a wildlife destination. It is inland fresh water, and it is the southern Pantanal seen at eye level and underwater rather than from a vehicle. If you want big animals, that is the Pantanal's job, and it is why the two are two halves of one trip rather than two competing choices. ## Why Bonito has to be booked before you arrive Every river, cave and waterfall circuit here operates on timed entry with a fixed number of visitors admitted per day. There is no turning up. Your slots are held in advance, which means the sequence of your three days is decided while you are still at home. The practical consequence is the opposite of how most people plan a trip. Leaving it late here does not lose you Bonito, it loses you the good slots inside Bonito: the early river when the light is best, the cave and the river on days that fit together, the circuit on the afternoon it belongs on. That is a quieter kind of disappointment than a cancelled trip and it is the one people actually meet. It is also the honest answer to why we charge for a private guide in a town where you could in principle arrange things yourself. What your guide is doing while you float is holding a schedule together that has no slack in it. ## When is the best time to visit Bonito? It is a year-round destination and the month decides what it is best at. **May to August, the dry winter.** The clearest water of the year, because no rain is stirring sediment, and the fish gather more densely. This is the season if the underwater photographs are the reason you are coming. Nights can drop below 15 degrees, which surprises people, while the water stays at 21 to 23. For part of the winter the river is warmer than the evening air, which makes Bonito the only place in Brazil where getting into the water is how you warm up. **December to March, the wet summer.** Over 30 degrees, waterfalls at full force, ideal for swimming. The cost is visibility, which can cloud for a while after heavy rain. These are also Brazilian school holidays, so it is busier and pricier. **April, October and November.** The compromise, and a good one: warm weather with waterfalls still carrying water. If you want one recommendation, May to September, for the clarity Bonito is known for. ## How many days do you need in Bonito? Two to three days, and three is what our own rate is built around. Three gives you a river morning, a cave and the waterfall circuit without any of them being rushed, which matters more here than usual because the timings are not yours to move on the day. More than three is rarely worth it unless you are diving. This is a place with a small number of very good things in it rather than an endless list, and we would rather send you on to the [Pantanal](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/southern-pantanal/) for the fourth day than pad the third. ## Do you need to be able to dive, and does it work with children? No certification is needed for any of it. Everything, including the flooded cave, works with a snorkel and a wetsuit. Diving is an option for certified divers, not a requirement for anybody. That is also what makes Bonito one of the easier destinations in Brazil for a family. The signature experiences are drifting and floating rather than swimming hard, the wetsuits do the work of keeping everyone warm, and a child who can put their face in the water gets the same river as an adult. The honest limit: this is a destination for people who will get in the water. Somebody who wants to stay dry will have a thin time here, and we would rather say that now than build them three days of it. ## How do you get to Bonito? Almost always by road from the southern Pantanal, a private transfer of about two and a half hours with your own guide, so the day between the two regions is part of the trip rather than a gap in it. Leaving, you fly out of Campo Grande, and there are two ways to reach the airport. A **private transfer** timed to your flight, so nobody spends three hours in a terminal. Or the **cheaper shuttle bus**, which runs to its own fixed departures and which we match to your flight as closely as its schedule allows. We name which one is in your quote, because the difference is real and it is the kind of thing that gets discovered at the wrong moment. ## What does Bonito cost, and what is not in the price? Our Bonito stays start here, and the second line matters as much as the first: - **Bonito**, 3 days: from US$700 per person, with the day trips and a private guide, at our 2026 rates. **Transfers in and out are not included in that figure**, unlike our [Chapada Diamantina](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/blog/chapada-diamantina-guide/) rate, which does include its transfer. We do not carry one convention across to the other and we would rather point that out than let you compare two numbers that are not the same shape. There is also a **conservation tax of 15 BRL per visitor per day**, paid locally at the sites and not part of our figure. It is a small amount and we name it anyway, because a charge nobody mentioned reads as a surprise when you meet it at a desk.
