Six hours inland the land lifts into flat-topped mountains cut through with rivers, waterfalls and flooded caves, and the whole region works on foot. That is the point of the Chapada Diamantina, and it is also the thing nobody tells you before you book: its two most photographed sights want opposite weather, so you are not choosing a best time to come, you are choosing which Chapada you get. **Quick answer:** The Chapada Diamantina is Bahia's trekking country, inland from Salvador, and two to three nights covers the classic sites at a civilised pace. Come between May and October for the walking and for the single beam of light that drops into the flooded caves. Come between November and March if you want Cachoeira da Fumaça and Cachoeira do Buracão at full force, and accept mud, heat and harder river crossings for it. May to July is the sweet spot that gets you both the trails and the beam. The gateway town is Lençóis, which is not the Lençóis Maranhenses, and that confusion is the single most common error on this destination. ## When is the best time to visit the Chapada Diamantina? It is a year-round destination, and the month decides what it is good at rather than whether to come at all. Here is the fork, stated plainly, because almost nothing else written about this region states it. **May to October, the dry season.** This is the walking half of the year: little rain, cooler air, and stable enough conditions for a multi-day trek. It also carries the light beam in the caves, roughly April or May through September or October. The cost is that some of the smaller waterfalls run low toward the end of it, August to October. **November to March, the rains.** This is the waterfall half. Fumaça and Buracão carry real water, everything is deep green, and the region looks the way the photographs promised. The cost is mud on the trails, humidity, heat and river crossings that get genuinely harder. **May to July** is the sweet spot if you want both, dry trails and the beam. **April or November** is the compromise the other way: full waterfalls with rain you can live with. If you want one default and no more thinking about it, May to September. ## How many days do you need in the Chapada Diamantina? Two to three nights for the classic sites without rushing them, which is what our own rate is built around. Three lets you take a full day on a proper trail, a cave morning and the Morro do Pai Inácio viewpoint at sunset, and still have an evening in Lençóis with your feet up. The Vale do Pati trek is the exception and it changes the arithmetic entirely. It needs two to three days on its own, on top of anything else you want to do, so a trip built around the Pati is a five to six night trip rather than a three. It also needs the dry season and it needs real fitness. It is also, and we do not say this about many things, the best thing in the region. ## What are the walks, and how hard are they really? They run from a flat stroll to a river pool up to full days that will tire a fit walker, and the good ones are not the easy ones. That is the honest version. The version most pages give you is a list of five sights with no indication that one of them is an afternoon and another is a serious day out. - **Cachoeira da Fumaça.** One of the tallest waterfalls in Brazil, and the classic walk here. The water never really arrives at the bottom: it breaks into spray on the way down, which is where the name, smoke, comes from, and why your photograph from the top looks more like weather than like water. - **The Vale do Pati trek.** The multi-day walk through the valley, sleeping in local houses along the way. Dry season, real fitness, and the thing people talk about for years. - **Cachoeira do Buracão.** A waterfall dropping into a canyon that you have to swim into to see properly. Best in and just after the rains, when it is actually carrying water. - **Morro do Pai Inácio.** A short climb to the viewpoint over the tabletop mountains. This is the standard sunset and nobody skips it, for good reason. - **Poço Azul and Poço Encantado.** The two flooded caves, and the reason the season matters here at all. More on those below. We will ask what you actually enjoy walking before we propose anything, and we would rather match the trails to you than hand everybody the same programme. Answer honestly, because the mountain finds out either way. ## The light beam in the flooded caves, and how to time it Two of the caves here filled with water rather than air, and from roughly April or May through September or October the sun stands at the right angle to send a single beam down through the opening and into the water. That beam is the image most people arrive with in their heads, and it is the one genuinely season-dependent thing in the whole region. Outside that window the caves are still caves and the water is still that colour, but the beam is not there. This is worth being precise about, because it is a physical fact about the sun rather than a matter of luck or a good guide. If the beam is why you are coming, the dates decide it before anything else does, and we will say so when we plan. ## How do you get to the Chapada Diamantina from Salvador? By road, and there are two versions of that journey. The **private transfer** takes about six hours and it is an upgrade on our starting price rather than the baseline. The **guided bus** takes about seven and a half hours and is what the starting price includes, and it is not what "bus" makes you imagine: your guide collects you at your hotel in [Salvador](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/salvador/), takes you to the terminal, walks you through it and puts you on the right bus to Lençóis. We say this out loud because most operators would quietly quote the private drive by default and let you assume it was necessary. That also makes the Chapada the natural inland half of a Bahia trip. No, and this is the mistake we correct more often than any other on this destination. Ask us about the Lençóis and we will ask you back which ones, every time. It is not pedantry. **Lençóis** is the small gateway town of the Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, in the mountains. The **[Lençóis Maranhenses](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-lencois-maranhenses/)** are dunes and rain-filled lagoons in Maranhão, about a thousand kilometres north, reached differently, timed differently and a completely separate trip. If you have been looking at photographs of turquoise pools between white dunes, you have been looking at the other one. ## What does it cost, and what will go wrong? The six hour private transfer is an upgrade on that. What moves the number is the season, the standard of pousada in Lençóis and how many of you are travelling, so the real figure comes back in a proposal for your dates. Two honest caveats. **Guiding here runs in English throughout, and a German-speaking guide depends on availability**, so we check before we promise rather than after. And what will go wrong: you will underestimate the walking. Almost everyone does, because the photographs are of viewpoints and the reality is of getting to them.
