The streets of the old centre were deliberately laid to slope toward the water, so at the spring tides around the full and new moon the ocean rises back up through the drains cut into the cobbles, floods the historic centre, mirrors three hundred years of whitewashed facades in the standing water, and then drains away again. Paraty is the only town we know that cleans itself, and it has been doing it since 1667. **Quick answer:** Paraty is a car-free colonial port town on the Costa Verde, about four hours by road from Rio de Janeiro, and it deserves two to three nights rather than a day trip. Build the stay around two things: the historic centre on foot, and the Caminho do Ouro, the original stone gold road that climbs into the Atlantic forest behind town. Add one boat day among the bay islands and you have the trip. April to October is the drier, calmer half of the year, and Paraty threads naturally into a coastal route with [Ilha Grande](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/ilha-grande/) and [Rio de Janeiro](https://www.authenticbraziltravel.com/destinations/rio-de-janeiro/). ## Is Paraty worth visiting, or is it just another pretty old town? It is worth it, and the test is simple: Paraty rewards people who like walking, water and being somewhere old. If you want nightlife, big-ticket attractions or a resort with a swim-up bar, this is not your town and you will be bored by the second afternoon. We would rather say that now than have you find out on the cobbles. What makes it more than pretty is what happened here. For most of the 1700s Paraty was where Brazil's gold met the sea, hauled down from the mines of Minas Gerais along a stone road through the mountains and loaded onto ships bound for Portugal. That money built the town you walk today: grand whitewashed houses with brightly painted doors, baroque churches, one built for the free and one for the enslaved, and streets paved in big irregular stones the locals call pé de moleque. Then the gold ran out, a railway later took the coffee trade somewhere else, and Paraty was simply left behind. Being forgotten is the reason it survived. In 2019 UNESCO inscribed Paraty and Ilha Grande as Brazil's first mixed World Heritage site, listed for culture and nature at the same time. The listing is bigger than the town: roughly 150,000 hectares taking in the Serra da Bocaina National Park, the Cairuçu protected area, Ilha Grande State Park and the Praia do Sul reserve, plus a surviving stretch of the gold road itself and the Quilombola, Guarani and Caiçara communities who still live inside it. That is the useful thing to know before you arrive. You are not visiting a preserved facade, you are visiting a place people never left. ## How many days do you need in Paraty? Two to three nights. That is not a padded answer, it is the shape of the place: one day for the historic centre and the Gold Trail, one day on the bay, and enough slack left over to sit in a praça at dusk and do nothing at all. The one mistake almost everyone makes is treating Paraty as a day trip from Rio. It sells well and we understand why. Four hours down one of the most beautiful coastal drives in Brazil, two hours on the cobbles, four hours back, home in time for dinner. You will get the photographs. You will not get the town, because everything Paraty is good at happens either early, late, or an hour outside it. Here is the sentence that costs us something. If your whole Brazil trip is ten days, Paraty is the stop we would cut first. The Amazon and the Pantanal have no smaller version, and Paraty does: it is still there next time. ## What is the Gold Trail, and how hard is the walk? The Caminho do Ouro is the actual road the gold came down, hand-laid stone, still in place, now cushioned in moss and swallowed by Atlantic forest. Part of it lies inside the World Heritage boundary. On a guided walk you follow the old paving uphill through the trees while the story of the road and the people who built it gets told along the way, with stops at forest waterfalls and pools clear enough to swim in. It is a real walk on uneven stone rather than a stroll, but it is not a mountaineering exercise, and the pace is yours because the guide is yours. It is the one experience here we would never let a guest skip, and it is very often the part of the whole trip people talk about afterwards. ## What else is there to do around Paraty? More than two or three nights can hold, which is a nice problem. - **A boat day among the bay islands.** Dozens of green islands and calm, clear coves, and the classic day is simply to sail between them, swimming and snorkelling wherever the water looks best, on a traditional wooden schooner or a private boat shaped around your day. - **Kayaking and forest waterfalls.** A morning paddling the quiet mangrove channels of the bay, then inland to where cold rivers come down through the forest into natural pools. Active without being hard, and it shows you both landscapes in one day. - **The Green Coast beaches.** Some of the best beaches here have no road at all. A coastal trail climbs over forested headlands and drops onto Praia do Sono and its neighbours, wide arcs of pale sand reachable only on foot or by boat. We usually walk in and come back by boat. - **The Mamanguá fjord.** A long, narrow arm of calm sea reaching deep between forested ridges, often called the only tropical fjord in Brazil. Paddle it, or climb the Pico do Pão de Açúcar above it for the view down the whole length of it. - **Jeep tours and a wild-food forest walk.** Countryside waterfalls and cachaça distilleries in the hills behind town, or a walk through the forest learning what in it is edible, which is more of it than you would guess. ## How do you get to Paraty from Rio de Janeiro? By road, and that is the only way, because Paraty has no airport. It is around four hours by private transfer from Rio de Janeiro along the coast, or five to six from São Paulo, which makes it the natural bridge between the two. The historic centre is car-free, so you get dropped at the edge and everything from there happens on foot or by water. Bring shoes rather than a wheeled suitcase. The old town has defeated far more suitcases than it has cars, which is fair, since it has no cars. ## When is the best time to visit Paraty, and how do you time the tide? April to October is the drier, milder half of the year, with calmer seas for boat days and better footing on the forest trails. The green summer from December to March is hotter and livelier, and also wetter, with heavier rain most afternoons. Neither is wrong. We simply move the boat day and the forest day around the forecast, which is the practical advantage of having a plan that is yours rather than a schedule that is somebody else's. The tide is the part worth actually timing. The flooded streets happen around the full and new moon, they last a couple of hours, and they are the single most photographed thing in town for good reason. Check the moon before you fix your dates, not after. ## Is Paraty safe, and what will a trip here cost? Paraty is one of the more relaxed corners of Brazil. The historic centre is small, flat and walkable, and it asks nothing like the vigilance a big city does. The usual sense applies after dark, keep an eye on your things and stay on lit streets, and that is genuinely the whole list for the town itself. The Gold Trail and the open bay are the two places where being on your own is a real risk rather than a theoretical one, which is exactly why a private guide is with you there.
