# Bonito, Brazil: Freshwater Snorkelling Tours

Freshwater Snorkelling in Water This Clear

Bonito is Brazil's freshwater snorkelling capital, two and a half hours by road from the southern Pantanal. Two to three privately guided days drifting down spring-fed rivers with fish at arm's length, snorkelling or diving a flooded cave, and swimming under waterfalls. It is the natural second half of a Pantanal trip, and we drive you across.

## Snorkelling, and not a beach in sight

Bonito sits inland in Mato Grosso do Sul, and everything worth doing there happens in fresh water. The rivers here run out of limestone springs, which is why you can read the bottom from the surface and why the fish stay put while you drift past them. You wear a wetsuit, you float, and you do not kick, because kicking is what clouds the water for everyone behind you.

Most of our guests reach it the same way: a few nights at a nature lodge in the southern Pantanal, then a private transfer with their guide, about two and a half hours by road. The Pantanal gives you open wetland and big animals. Bonito gives you the same region at eye level and underwater. They are two halves of one trip rather than two destinations.

## Handpicked experiences in Bonito

We don't list every tour, only the ones we'd actually send you on: the unmissable classics, plus a few most visitors never find.

Signature

### Float the Rio Sucuri or the Rio da Prata

Half a day

The two classic snorkelling rivers. You enter at the spring, drift with the current for a kilometre or so, and the fish simply carry on with their day around you. Wetsuits are provided, and the water sits at 21 to 23 degrees all year.

Classic

### Snorkel or dive a flooded cave

Half a day

Bonito sits on limestone, so the caves here filled with water rather than air. You can snorkel the flooded chambers, and certified divers can go deeper. It is the part of Bonito nobody expects before they arrive.

### Waterfall circuit

Half a day

A walking circuit between waterfalls you can swim under, which is the right way to spend an afternoon here between two river mornings.

### Private transfer from the Pantanal

About 2.5 hours

Your Pantanal guide drives you across, so the day between the two regions is part of the trip rather than a gap in it.

### Day trips with a private guide

Daily

Every site here runs on timed entry with a fixed number of visitors a day, so the order of your days is booked in advance rather than decided over breakfast. That is what your guide is arranging while you swim.

## Your day-by-day journey

This is just one example of how your days could unfold, every itinerary is private and fully tailored, so we gladly reshape it around your pace, interests and travel dates.

## Water clear enough to forget it is there

Bonito works in every month of the year, and the month decides what it is good at. May to September gives you the clearest water and the best snorkelling. December to March gives you heat, full waterfalls and a livelier river.

## Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Bonito? +

Bonito is a year-round destination, and the month decides what it is best at. May to August, the dry winter, gives the clearest water for snorkelling, because no rain is stirring up sediment and the fish gather more densely. Nights can drop below 15 degrees then, though the water stays at 21 to 23 and a wetsuit is provided. December to March is hot, over 30 degrees, with powerful waterfalls, at the cost of visibility that can cloud briefly after heavy rain. October, November and April sit in between and are the best compromise.

How many days do we need in Bonito? +

Two to three days. Three lets you take a river morning, a cave and a waterfall circuit without rushing any of them, which is why our own rate is quoted for three nights.

How do we get to Bonito? +

Almost always by road from the southern Pantanal, a private transfer of about two and a half hours with your guide. Leaving, you fly out of Campo Grande, and there are two ways to reach it: a private transfer timed to your flight so you are not sitting in the terminal for hours, or a cheaper shuttle bus with fixed departures that we match to your flight as closely as its schedule allows.

Do we need to be able to dive? +

No. Everything here works with a snorkel and a wetsuit, including the flooded cave. Diving is an option for certified divers, not a requirement for anyone.

Are the guides in Bonito German speaking? +

In Bonito we work mainly with English-speaking guides. Your trip is planned and coordinated in your own language throughout, but expect the guiding on the ground here to be in English.

What does Bonito cost? +

From US$700 per person for three nights with day trips and a private guide, at our 2026 rates, not counting the transfers in and out. The 15 BRL daily conservation tax is paid locally. Travelling in a larger group lowers the price per person, because the guide and the vehicle are shared.
