May to October is the dry season and the best walking: little rain, cooler air and stable conditions for multi-day treks like the Vale do Pati. It also carries the light beam in the caves, roughly April or May through September or October. November to March is the rainy season and the best waterfalls, with Fumaça and Buracão at full force and everything deep green, at the cost of muddy trails, heat and harder river crossings. The sweet spot is May to July, or April and November if you want the waterfalls full and can accept some rain. How many days do we need? + Two to three nights covers the classic sites at a civilised pace. The Vale do Pati trek needs two to three days on its own, so budget more if that is the reason you are coming. How do we get there from Salvador? + Two ways. A private transfer takes about six hours. The bus takes about seven and a half and is included in our starting price, and it is not a case of being dropped at a station and left to it: your guide collects you at your hotel in Salvador, brings you to the terminal, talks you through it and puts you on the right bus to Lençóis. How hard is the walking? + It ranges from a flat stroll to a river pool up to full days that will tire a fit walker, and we would rather match the trails to you than hand everybody the same programme. Some of the best routes here are genuinely demanding, so tell us honestly what you enjoy and what you do not. Is this the same as the Lençóis Maranhenses? + No, and the names cause this confusion constantly. Lençóis is the gateway town of the Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia. The Lençóis Maranhenses are dunes and rain-filled lagoons in Maranhão, about a thousand kilometres north, and a separate trip entirely. What is the Vale do Pati trek like? + Two to three days on foot through the valley, sleeping in the houses of the people who live there rather than in tents.
