Lençóis means bedsheets, and from above that is exactly what the park looks like: endless white dunes laid out in soft folds to the horizon. What makes it unlike any desert on the planet is the water. This stretch of coast gets heavy seasonal rain, but the sand sits on a layer of rock that traps it, so instead of draining away the rainwater pools in the valleys between the dunes and forms thousands of separate lagoons. For a few months a year those lagoons are full, clear and warm, glowing turquoise against the white sand with not a building or a road in sight. You climb a dune expecting more sand and find a swimming pool the colour of the sky waiting on the other side. Then you climb the next dune and do it again. There is nowhere else quite like it. The catch is that it is entirely seasonal. Come at the wrong time of year and the lagoons are half-empty or gone, and the magic goes with them. Getting the window right is the single most important decision you will make about this trip. Almost everyone uses the same home base, and for good reason. It sits on the Rio Preguiças at the eastern edge of the park, with the best range of pousadas, restaurants and services, and it is where the 4x4 trips and the river boats set off from. For a first visit this is where you want to be: comfortable, well connected, and a short drive from the most famous lagoons. A small, sandy, road-optional village where the dunes meet the sea and the Preguiças meets the Atlantic, it has become a beloved beach town in its own right: barefoot, laid-back, strong on kitesurfing, and dotted with charming little pousadas. Many people visit for the day by boat, and a growing number base themselves here instead for a more remote, toes-in-the-sand stay. It sees far fewer visitors than Barreirinhas and opens onto a different set of lagoons, so it appeals to travellers who want the dunes with even fewer people around. The trade-off is fewer services and a longer haul to reach it, which is exactly why it stays so peaceful. ## How you actually reach the lagoons. The park has no roads. You park at the crest of a dune, walk down into a natural amphitheatre of sand, and swim in warm rainwater the colour of a swimming pool. The trick is timing. Go in the late afternoon rather than at midday: the light turns the sand gold, the heat eases, and the day-trip crowds start to thin. A boat runs down the Rio Preguiças from Barreirinhas toward the coast, making a string of stops along the way: the small dunes and lookout at Vassouras, the leaning lighthouse at Mandacaru, the palm-fringed river beach at Caburé where the river almost meets the sea, and finally the village of Atins. It has its own lagoons and, because it sits further from the main gateway, far fewer people. Reached on foot or by a short quad or 4x4 hop from Atins, it is where you go to feel like you have the sand to yourself. At dusk near Atins, thousands of scarlet ibis stream back to roost in the mangroves, and for a few minutes the trees turn a solid, unreal flame-red as the birds settle. A small boat takes you out to watch it from the water as the light fades. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles of the Brazilian northeast, and it happens quietly, just off the tourist track, most evenings in the right season. ## Two ways to go deeper. Most visits stay close to Barreirinhas. If you have the time, the fitness or the sense of adventure, two experiences take you far beyond the day trips. Over three days, fit and active travellers trek from Santo Amaro through the untouched heart of the park to Atins, sleeping in hammocks with the native families of two remote oasis villages and swimming in hidden lagoons that almost no one on earth ever sees. It is hard, unforgettable, and completely off the standard trail. A trip in its own right, and one that can be built onto the end of your time in the dunes. See the route Do it right ## How to see the Lençóis at their best. Everything here hinges on timing. The lagoons are fed only by rain, so they fill through the wet months and slowly dry out afterwards. Arrive in the sweet spot and they are brimming and turquoise; arrive a few months late and you may find cracked sand where the water should be. This is not a place to visit on a whim at any time of year. Beyond the calendar, the rest is about light and heat. The sand is punishing at midday and magical at either end of the day, so the best visits are built around early mornings and late afternoons, with the middle of the day spent out of the sun. ### Come in the window The lagoons are full and luminous from about June to September, with July and August the safest bet. Outside that, you gamble on the water. ### Chase the golden hours Visit the lagoons early or late, not at noon. The light is better, the sand is cooler and the crowds are thinner. ### Base in Barreirinhas It has the best pousadas, services and access to the famous lagoons. Add a night or two in Atins if you want the beach-town side. ### Respect the sun and sand Bring high-factor sunscreen, water and something for your feet. The rains fall roughly from January to May and fill the lagoons; the water is then at its fullest and most turquoise from about June to September, the classic window, with July and August the most reliable. From around October the lagoons begin to shrink, and by the end of the year many have dried up entirely. If seeing the lagoons full is the point, and it is, plan for the middle of that window. How do I get there? + You fly into São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, and continue from there to Barreirinhas, the main gateway town on the edge of the park, either by road (around four hours) or by a short light-aircraft hop. From Barreirinhas the 4x4 trips and river boats set off. It is more of a journey than most Brazilian beach destinations, which is part of why the Lençóis still feel so unspoiled. How physically demanding is it, and who is it for? + The standard visits are easy. A 4x4 ride and a short walk over a dune to a lagoon are within almost anyone’s reach, and the river boat trip is fully relaxed. Walking on soft sand takes a little effort, but nothing serious. The exception is the multi-day crossing on foot, which is a genuine physical challenge for fit, active travellers only. For everyone else, the Lençóis are very accessible. Is it safe? + Yes. This is remote nature rather than a big city, and the risks are practical ones: sun, heat and soft terrain rather than crime. Sensible sun protection, plenty of water and a knowledgeable local guide who reads the dunes and the season are all it takes to feel comfortable here. It is one of the more relaxed places in Brazil to travel. What does a Lençóis Maranhenses trip cost? + Privately guided Lençóis trips start from US$1,400 per person for four days on the ground, with accommodation and transfers included. Flights, international and domestic, are not part of that. The 4x4 and boat logistics carry the cost here, so the size of your party moves the per-person figure most, because vehicle and guide are shared.
