The green wet season (December to March) is lusher, superb for birds and dramatic skies, with animals more dispersed. We plan around exactly what you most want to see. Northern or southern Pantanal, which side should I choose? + The northern Pantanal, in Mato Grosso, is reached from Cuiabá along the Transpantaneira and is where the jaguar boat safaris happen, both on the famous Porto Jofre side and in the quieter western reserves like Taiamã. The southern Pantanal, in Mato Grosso do Sul, is reached from Campo Grande, leans more towards fazenda stays, horseback riding and birdlife, and pairs naturally with Bonito. If seeing a wild jaguar is the point of the trip, we send you north. Porto Jofre or the western reserves? + Porto Jofre probably gives you the best jaguar odds anywhere on Earth, and it is about six hours by road from Cuiabá down the Transpantaneira. The trade is company: in the peak months the boats concentrate on the same few stretches of river, and one cat can draw a queue of them. The western reserves around Cáceres and the Taiamã hold excellent odds too, are barely visited, and sit about three hours from Cuiabá rather than six, which is why we increasingly propose them first. If the highest possible probability matters more to you than the setting, say so and we will send you to Porto Jofre without arguing. What does a Pantanal trip cost, and what drives the price? + Privately guided trips in the northern Pantanal start from US$1,800 per person for five days on the ground, with accommodation, transfers and guiding included, and flights are not part of that. Four things move the number: the season, how many days you spend on the water looking for jaguars, the standard of the fazenda or river lodge, and whether the boat and guide are yours alone. The dry months from June to October cost more because that is when the sightings are. You get one fixed price from us that covers transfers, lodging, guiding and the boat days, with nothing added on arrival. The southern Pantanal, reached from Campo Grande, is the cheaper half, from US$1,350 per person for five days, and gives up only the reliability of a jaguar sighting. Is there a luxury jaguar safari in the Pantanal? + It depends what you mean by luxury, and we would rather be straight about it. If you mean marble bathrooms and a spa, no: the Pantanal has comfortable, characterful fazenda and river lodges, not five-star hotels, because it is a working wetland hours down a dirt road. If you mean exclusive use, which is what luxury actually buys in wildlife travel, then yes and it is the whole point: your own boat on the river, a wildlife guide who is yours alone, private transfers, and no shared vehicle deciding when you leave a jaguar. That is where the money goes here, and it is worth more at 6am on the Cuiabá river than any suite would be. How does a jaguar safari actually work? + From the water. You go out in a small open boat with a guide and a driver, usually early morning and late afternoon, and work the river channels where the cats come down to drink and hunt. Radio contact between boats means a sighting is shared, so you are not searching alone. Between outings you rest at the lodge through the midday heat. Nothing is guaranteed with wild animals, but the dry season on the northern rivers has the highest sighting rates anywhere. Can I have a German speaking guide in the Pantanal? + Yes, almost always.
