This route follows the water before it reaches the wetland, from the clear springs around Nobres through the forested Serra das Araras and on to the Rio Paraguai. In three days you snorkel above schools of fish, walk to waterfalls hidden inside primary forest and spend time with the Balatiponé Umutina community. After checking into a comfortable local pousada, you enter one of the spring fed rivers of the gallery forest for an easy snorkeling drift above fish and pale river sand. Late afternoon belongs to Lagoa das Araras. A short, manageable walk reaches a waterfall and a clear natural pool with time to swim. If the road and daylight allow, there is room for a second waterfall. Dinner is homemade and the night is spent in a simple pousada in the mountains, close enough to the forest that morning arrives before the traffic does.
