New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro: How to Plan Réveillon on Copacabana

Twelve minutes. That is how long the fireworks over Copacabana lasted at the last New Year, the largest display Rio has ever fired according to City Hall, and about 2.5 million people stood on the beach to watch them. You plan six months ahead for those twelve minutes. It is a fair trade. It is just better to know the terms before you book.

The fireworks are fired from boats along the bay rather than from the sand, so the whole length of Copacabana gets the same view. Smaller displays run at the same time in Flamengo, at the Penha church and in two parks in the west of the city. Big names in Brazilian music play before and after, and the night does not end with the last rocket. It ends sometime around sunrise.

Why does everyone wear white, and what are the seven waves?

White is the standard New Year's Eve outfit in Brazil, a tradition that comes from the Afro-Brazilian religions Candomblé and Umbanda. After midnight many people jump seven waves, making a wish with each one, and some offer flowers to Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea.

It is the easiest dress code you will ever follow, and also the strictest. A black shirt makes you the one person in two and a half million that every photographer can find. The waves are just as simple: the ocean does not keep count, you do.

You do not have to believe any of it to join in, and nobody checks. But when the seventh wave arrives, very few people are still standing on the dry sand.

When should you book New Year's Eve in Rio?

Book New Year's Eve in Rio earlier than any other week of the year except Carnival. Start planning by August or September at the latest, because the well placed hotels on Copacabana go first.

The reason is in the hotel tariffs. Many Rio properties take 26 or 27 December to 3 January out of their normal rates entirely and sell it as a package of its own, with a minimum stay of usually three to four nights and a price they only give on request. Nobody books a single night for the 31st. The hotels settled that question long before you asked it.

The price follows the demand, and that week the demand is extreme. The closer it gets to New Year, the more each night costs, often several times the normal rate, and the most expensive nights are 30 and 31 December. Booking early is not only cheaper, it is how you still get a choice of hotel at all.

That has an awkward consequence for this article: we cannot publish a starting price for the nights around New Year. Where should you stay in Rio for New Year's Eve?

For New Year's Eve, stay in Copacabana itself, within walking distance of the beach. At the last New Year the beachfront Avenida Atlântica was closed to cars after 7 a.m. on 31 December, and after 9 p.m. no vehicles could enter the neighbourhood at all.

This is the one night of the year when our private transfer cannot help you, and we would rather tell you now. On that evening our driver is exactly as fast as you on foot, possibly slower. Ipanema and Leblon are the nicer neighbourhoods for the rest of your stay, but on the 31st they sit a long walk or a packed metro ride away from the fireworks.

How do you get to Copacabana on New Year's Eve?

On New Year's Eve you reach Copacabana on foot or by metro. At the last New Year the metro ran a special service between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., with round trip tickets at 15 reais, sold only online and only until 6 p.m. on 31 December.

Tickets were tied to fixed time slots between 7 and 11 p.m., and only five stations were open for the trip back after midnight. Parking on Avenida Atlântica was banned from the morning of 30 December. The city has not yet announced the 2026 to 2027 rules, and we send them to our guests as soon as it does.

Carry little: your phone, some cash, and no bag you have to hold on to all night. Bottles, fireworks and surfboards were banned on the metro. If you were planning to arrive at the fireworks with a surfboard, you now have your answer.

Is New Year's Eve on Copacabana safe?

The realistic risk on Copacabana on New Year's Eve is pickpocketing in a very dense crowd. At the last New Year the city monitored the area with 307 cameras in Copacabana alone, and the rule still stands: bring only what you could afford to lose.

The city also asked families to put ID bracelets on children, which in a crowd that size is less excessive than it sounds. What is the weather like in Rio over New Year?

Over New Year Rio is hot and humid, with heavy rain on many afternoons. December is high summer in the southern hemisphere, and the rain tends to keep to its schedule: beach in the morning, something indoors in the afternoon.

Rio runs on UTC minus 3, two hours ahead of New York in December, so the jet lag is mild for anyone flying from the East Coast. The heat is the part to respect. Keep the first day light, and plan the long night on the beach for after you have slept.

The best alternative to New Year's Eve in Rio is Florianópolis, an island in southern Brazil with 42 beaches. The fireworks are smaller than on Copacabana, but the ritual is the same: white clothes on the beach and seven waves at midnight.

I live on Florianópolis and celebrate New Year here myself. It is not the spectacle of a megacity under Sugarloaf, and it does not try to be. What you get instead is a beach you will swim from the next morning, rather than one you leave by shuffling back to the metro with a few hundred thousand new friends.
