Whale Watching in Brazil: Two Coasts, Two Seasons

Brazil has two whale seasons, on two coasts, with two different animals, and almost nobody planning a trip here knows about either. They also both fall in the months that get written off as the Brazilian winter, which is the part worth knowing: the season people skip is the season the whales turn up.

Quick answer: Humpbacks pass along the Bahian coast from July to October, and a morning boat trip out of Praia do Forte is the version of that we actually run. Southern right whales appear off the Santa Catarina coast in the far south, around Praia do Rosa and Imbituba, roughly July to November with September and October usually the best months. We operate on the Bahian coast and not on the southern one, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

Where can you see whales in Brazil?

Two places, and they are most of the length of the country and one entire climate apart.

The Bahian coast, in the northeast. Humpbacks pass along here to breed between July and October. This is warm water, it is the coast we sell, and the whale morning slots into a beach stay at Praia do Forte without changing anything else about a trip.

The Santa Catarina coast, in the far south. Southern right whales appear along this coast from roughly July to November, with September and October usually the best sighting months, concentrated around Praia do Rosa and Imbituba. This is cold, southern, winter water and a genuinely different experience.

If you take one thing from this piece, take the timing rather than the geography: both seasons sit inside the southern winter, so the answer to "is July a bad month for Brazil" is that it depends what you came for.

Humpbacks off Bahia, July to October

This is the one we know, so it gets the detail. The whales pass along the coast to breed, and a morning boat trip out of the village puts you offshore while they are doing it. Breaching is what people come for and it is what they talk about afterwards.

It is seasonal and it is weather dependent, and both of those matter more than the brochure version suggests. A morning can be called off for sea state, and we would rather move it to the following day than send you out into a swell. Nobody guarantees a sighting, us included, and any operator who does is describing a marketing promise rather than an animal.

What makes it easy is that it costs the trip nothing. You are already on this coast for the beach and for Salvador, and the whale morning is one early start inside a stay whose entire point is not having early starts.

The overlap worth planning for is September and October, when the humpbacks are still passing and the turtle hatchlings at Projeto TAMAR have started. Sun, hatchlings and whales in the same week is the closest this coast comes to a perfect month.

Southern right whales off Santa Catarina, and why we do not sell it

The southern coast has the better-known whale watching in Brazil among Brazilians, and we do not run trips there.

Praia do Rosa and Imbituba are the centre of it, the season is roughly July to November with September and October usually strongest, and that is the honest limit of what we will tell you, because writing up a coast we do not work on from a map is exactly the thing this journal exists not to do.

What we can tell you is how it fits. Santa Catarina in winter is genuinely cold, especially at night and inland, and the nearest place we do know well is Florianópolis, an hour or two up the same coast, which in those months is empty, quiet and cheap for the same reasons. If a southern whale trip is the point of your journey, a specialist on that coast will serve you better than we will.

Does whale season fit the rest of a Brazil trip?

Better than almost any other seasonal event in the country, and this is the argument that makes the post worth writing.

These months sit inside the Pantanal dry season, when the water recedes and the wildlife gathers at what is left. It is also Amazon low water, roughly July to December, when the river beaches appear and the forest trails open. And the Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons are full and deep blue from June to August.

Lay those over each other and July to September does an unusual amount of work in one trip: jaguars at their most findable, the Amazon at its most walkable, full lagoons in the northeast, and humpbacks off Bahia on the beach days at the end. The cost of that window, stated plainly: July is the Brazilian school holiday month and the busiest, priciest stretch of the year nationwide. August does almost everything July does, for less.

What a whale morning actually involves

An early start, a small boat and a lot of looking at water.

You go out in the morning because the sea is usually calmer then, you spend a good while seeing nothing, and then something the size of a bus comes out of the water off the bow and nobody on board says anything sensible for a minute afterwards. That is the shape of it. It is not a scheduled performance and it does not run to a timetable.

Bring the warm layer. Even off Bahia, a boat in the morning wind is colder than the beach you left twenty minutes ago, which is the single most common thing people are unprepared for, as our Brazil packing list says at greater length.
