The Experience

A wetland the size of a country

The Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland on Earth, a flooded plain the size of a country spread across the heart of South America, and the single best place anywhere to see a wild jaguar. When the waters recede in the dry season the wildlife gathers along the rivers and roads in numbers that feel almost unreal: giant otters and capybaras, caimans by the hundred, and a cast of birds from hyacinth macaws to the towering jabiru stork that is the wetland's emblem.

You explore it the way the animals do, by water and across open country. Private safari boats slip into the quiet side channels and strictly protected reserves like Taiamã, some of the finest jaguar-watching on the planet, while horseback and 4x4 safaris cross the plains of the working cattle ranches, the fazendas, where Brazil's Pantaneiro cowboys still live. To the east lie the legendary Transpantaneira and the famous jaguars of Porto Jofre; to the west, a roadless wilderness that even seasoned Pantanal travelers rarely reach.

We only build private, guided journeys here, shaped around the season and the wildlife you most want to see. The dry months, roughly June to October, are prime jaguar time; the green season brings dramatic skies and spectacular birdlife. Tell us your dates and how you like to travel, and we plan the whole thing around you.

Things To Do

Handpicked experiences in Pantanal

We don't list every tour, only the ones we'd actually send you on: the unmissable classics, plus a few most visitors never find.

Classic

Jaguar safaris by boat

Glide through quiet side channels and strictly protected reserves like Taiamã, among the very best places on Earth to watch wild jaguars, giant otters and caimans from the water.

Classic

The jaguars of Porto Jofre

At the Encontro das Águas park, jaguars live at one of the highest densities anywhere. From a fast safari boat you may watch them swim, hunt and doze on the riverbanks.

Insider tip

Night safaris

After dark a spotlight sweeps the banks for the wetland's nocturnal life: the glowing eyes of caimans, tapirs, night monkeys and, now and then, a jaguar on the move.

Signature

Life on a fazenda

Ride out across open savanna with the Pantaneiros, Brazil's traditional cowboys, lend a hand in the daily work of a cattle ranch, and end the day at a campfire under an enormous sky.

Classic

Birds and wetland wildlife

Hundreds of species, from hyacinth macaws and toco toucans to the towering jabiru stork, alongside capybaras, giant otters and some of the most spectacular sunsets in Brazil.

Insider tip

The Transpantaneira and the wild west

The legendary raised dirt road over hundreds of little wooden bridges, and the roadless western Pantanal around the Serra do Amolar that even regulars rarely reach.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit the Pantanal? +

The dry season, roughly July to October, is prime time: as the water recedes, wildlife concentrates along the rivers and roads, and it's your best chance of spotting wild jaguars. The green wet season (December to March) is lusher, superb for birds and dramatic skies, with animals more dispersed. We plan around exactly what you most want to see.

Is the Pantanal safe? +

Yes, you're with an expert wildlife guide throughout, and safety is mostly about following a few sensible instructions around the animals and on the boats. Your guide is always on hand with advice, and by following their tips you can feel as safe as possible, including during your own free time back at the lodge in the evenings when the guide isn't at dinner with you. We're only ever a message away.

Can I do this as a solo traveller? +

Yes, and it is one of the better places to do it. Every Pantanal trip we plan is private, so there is no minimum number of travellers, no fixed departure date to wait for and no risk of the trip being cancelled because nobody else booked it. The vehicle, the boat and the guide's full attention are yours, which is exactly what you want at first light when the sensible thing is to stay at one riverbank for another hour rather than move on. If you are travelling alone, the single-room supplement is itemised in your proposal before you decide anything, so you always know what it costs.

Can I combine the Pantanal with the Amazon? +

Absolutely, it's the ultimate Brazil wildlife pairing. The Pantanal delivers open-wetland safaris and jaguars, the Amazon adds dense rainforest and river life. We arrange the internal flights and transfers so the two flow together as one seamless private journey.

Is the Pantanal good for a family safari? +

Yes, and children who love animals are spellbound here. Wildlife is watched from open safari vehicles and calm boats rather than on long treks, so it suits a range of ages, and the sightings come thick and fast: capybaras, caimans, giant otters, hundreds of birds and, with luck, a jaguar. We stay in fazenda and river lodges with family rooms, keep the days flexible around naps and heat, and it works best for children who can manage early starts. It is a natural highlight of our Family and Multi-Generational journey.
